W.A.I.T.
About a 2 minute read.
I don’t know why but every time I think of the word “wait” the song Mr. Postman goes off in my head The Marvellettes classic 1961 song.
Wait Mister Postman
Oh yeah
(Is there a letter in your bag for me) Please, Please Mister Postman
(Why's it been a very long time) Oh yeah
(Since I heard from this boyfriend of mine)
The way the song starts with a dramatic WAIT! It is such a great start to a song. Ah, I have the song in my head now. Anyway………
W.A.I.T. is such a great phrase that I heard a couple of years ago. It stands for “Why Am I Talking”. What a great acronym, it spells out what it means. I heard it from Ben Fisher of Lifeline in Hobart. It was a moment when somebody said something to you and you remember exactly where you were; those are often powerful moments. When he explained W.A.I.T. it just made sense.
W.A.I.T. is used by Lifeline in order to help the volunteers remember not to talk too much. Helping people is so much about listening, just being there! So many of people's challenges and issues can’t be solved, however, people can receive great support when they are listened to. That is often all they need or all they want. Be Heard, Be Understood, Belong
I wish some people would use W.A.I.T. more than they do. I’ve talked about this in a few of the blogs Looking over my shoulder and Is this a hijack? People can become totally unaware that they are just talking and talking, and the other person is not engaged at all.
Try W.A.I.T. it really helped me with my listening skills. I have been known to be quite chatty, so I am very glad I found it. Try it out.
You better wait a minute, wait a minute
Oh you better wait a minute
Please please Mister Postman (Wait a minute Mister Postman)
If you have no idea what song I am talking about here it is on Spotify Mr. Postman
